This story was interesting in that it initially had me wondering where we'd end up.
[Spoiler alert]
With gender ambivalence, mutability, instability and furriness all having a part, I was leaning towards the werewolf/supernatural for a bit until the good doctor and his lab made their appearance.
With the creepiness factor escalating in the last quarter of the piece I was suddenly struck with a moment of deja vu, having recently seen Splice.
Thankfully that didn't play out, and I was left with one thought after the story closed:
Evolve or die.
Socially, morally, or as a species, take your pick.
On another note, I'm almost ready to become a minion. This is the best speculative fiction on the web IMO.
Cheers!
