Can't say I much liked this story--I can't think of *any* "sentient building" story that I've ever liked--but I did enjoy the outro. Kate, based on what you said about the feelings you get when contemplating the empty, post-human landscape, you might really enjoy the book "The World Without Us," by Alan Weisman. An excellent look at how the natural world would rebound if we did manage to drive ourselves to extinction, complete with looks at actual abandoned areas, such as the DMZ between the two Koreas.
