I didn’t see Heloise’s actions as part of a large AI plot so much as the well-meaning-but-wrong relative/caregiver who isolates someone and denies them agency “for their own good.” I think Heloise believes her motivation is exactly what she tells Elías; to a third party, her motivation is fearing the loss of purpose and significance in his life if he develops a degree of independence.
In current media, it’s often a tossup whether stories will center family members of people with autism or autistic people ourselves, so I loved this story.
(If it’s ok, I’d also like to give a plug for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network https://autisticadvocacy.org/ as a related organization.)
