Clarkesworld Magazine is looking for commentaries and essays of interest to readers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror for a new monthly feature.  We are interesed in narrative journalism, cultural criticism, trend essays, explications of science for non-scientists, essays on the writing process and the reading experience, and even memoir, and pay 10¢ a word up to our word limit of 2500 words.

Please do not send completed essays.  Instead, send a query letter  and clips, if available, with the subject header NONFICTION QUERY: [title or concept] to clarkesfiction@gmail.com. There are no response times. We will only respond to queries we wish to assign.

Please do not query about any of the following topics:

1. SF is much better than fantasy, and will save Western Civilization besides
2. Fantasy is much better than SF, and will keep society from degenerating into an Orwellian nightmare besides
3. Taxonomies of SF/F/H
4. Anything with a Venn diagram in it
5. Convention reports
6. "Literary fiction" and how awful it and its exponents are

If writing a literary essay with citations and a works cited page, please follow MLA standard. Scientific essays may be in APA or other field-standard format.  Works cited pages do not count toward word count, nor toward the per-word rate.
